7th to 14th June 2010With so much natural food available for the trout at this time of the year in the way of pin fry and damsels, and the wind direction set firmly from the north, the fishing has proved very challenging indeed, to the point of impossible, but a few telltale signs are showing that the fishing is set to improve.
The Police Sport North East Fly Fishing Championships took place under the guidance of organiser Malcolm Naylor. Due to the hard fishing conditions the competition certainly did not see many fish weighed in but John Archibald took the heaviest individual with a fine rainbow of 13lb 15oz, John’s fish won the match for North Yorkshire A team, with runners up West Yorkshire.
The English Disabled Fly Fishers Association fished their floating line competition and again the odds were stacked against the anglers, all enjoyed a good day.
The Association of Major Fishing Clubs event hosted by Dave Summers of the Leicestershire Police fished a match against Tunbridge Wells, East Midlands Fly Fishers and Cambridge Invicta. Tim Leech of East Midlands FFA was top individual with three fish for 10lb 4oz.
A few superb heavier fish have been taken recently; John Thomson of Corby enjoyed an afternoon boat session and took a fine 12lb rainbow
Jim Deacon of Leicester boat fished, accompanied by his son Darren, and the pair were over the moon when Jim tempted a super fish that weighed 10lb 6oz on an olive Nymph from Dogwood bay.
