Fly fishing clubs representing the Royal Navy and including Portsmouth and the Royal marines held a competition at Eyebrook last week in very hot conditions not conducive to trout fishing.

The competition was deemed a huge success by organiser Al Mundy and the winning team on the day were the Royal Marines.

Top rod was Tony Wilkinson representing the Naval air command; Tony took six fish and included the best fish of the day at 6lb.

Neil Benjamin and party from Scunthorpe enjoyed their three days boat fishing break at Eyebrook returning some hard fighting rainbows on Daddies and Bibios anchored in the Main Basin.

Eyebrook regular Colin Hendry drifted and took eight rainbows on Black and Claret Hoppers and suspender buzzers including a fine 5lb 5oz specimen.

Gordon Price and Nobby Clark of Leicester took sixteen rainbows for 34lb from the Main basin on a combination of Black and Claret hoppers.

Shaun Reynolds of Market Deeping accompanied Craig Hulse of Peterborough on one of the fisheries three WheelyBoats, the pair opted to fish with Daddies. It was Shaun’s first trout fishing session and he was rewarded with his first ever rainbow, a fabulous 11lb 10oz!

Due to the warmer conditions of late most of the resident trout seem to have accumulated in the confines of the Main Basin and the most effective fish catching method at present is to drift through them using the washing line method, a buoyant fly on the point to suspend the droppers in the surface, daddies and hoppers are also well worth a try.
